Groups that weren’t considered white (Italians, Irish, Jews etc) would help the white hierarchy oppress others to earn “in status”.

There’s a great book out on how that prejudice shifted - they had to “earn” whiteness by helping to suppress others. My paternal grandfather was one of those stereotypical corrupt Irish cops doing just that - though I’m sure he only saw it as “playing the system”
