Signs of the Times

Red sky and morning news—
my stomach churns witnessing
the dismantling of democracy.
Take warning.
Take a breath.
Discern. Pray.
Then rise to meet this day.

Jesus said, "I have compassion for the crowd & do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way." The disciples said to him, "Where are we to get enough bread in the desert to feed so great a crowd?" Jesus asked them, "How many loaves have you?"

Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him

I much prefer the chance to chant a psalm

When I need a quick, relatively foolproof, salve
Or have managed to entangle myself yet again
In a muddle only God would ever forgive.

“Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd & had compassion for them”

Jesus took time alone to recharge, then with compassion healed & fed 5000!

do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you,
pray for those who abuse you

Give to everyone who begs from you

Do to others as you would have them do to you.

The king said to me, "Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This can only be sadness of the heart." Then I was very much afraid. I said, "Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my ancestors' graves, lies waste, and its gates have been destroyed?"

Thistle of rain.
We seek temple from tempest,
litany in lightning,

a mottled crowd huddled,
backs to the wall,
gasping for refuge.

Then, in an instant, the heavens smile

Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother—both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.

From my new poem inspired by the 7th chapter of the Gospel according to John.

The people were curious.
The authorities, cautious.

Oh wow — this appears to be footage of the incident from yesterday, in which Rev. Jorge Bautista, a United Church of Christ minister, was shot in the face with a pepper ball — which may have exploded before impact? Or is a slightly different munition? — by an apparent DHS agent while protesting ICE.
From the people that pretend to be Christian, they hit a clergyman directly while protesting.

They’ve gone from attacking marginalized communities to attacking the community in general. Now they are openly attacking religious institutions.

Many priests and heads of families, old people who had seen the first house on its foundations, wept with a loud voice when they saw this house, though many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the people’s weeping

On the Feast of St. James of Jerusalem:

God of revelation and reform,
we thank you for James and his change from unbelief
to knowing Jesus, his brother, as Savior,
and dying for his faith.
Grant that when we are wrong
we may trust you enough to change.
Amen.
