and Matrix has done a good number of things right.
I still have an account on a public server, and I'll be willing to try to self-host again after some time, hoping that the situation with CSAM attacks can be fixed.
For now, I can only wish you good luck.

I know you're all trying your best with limited resources. I can't hide I'm disappointed by some things, and from my point of view, it's hard to see a future that looks bright. But I'm still rooting for you. I've been a huge fan for a while, because I do think the world needs decentralized messenger

I didn't mean it as "hate", the blog post is all written with a light tone in mind, so most of what you may find hateful is just performative rage. I thought it was clear, but I'll push out an update to specify it, since I didn't mean for anyone to feel offended by it.

I've written more about my disappointment towards the direction Matrix is going in this blog post: massive.box/blog/decentr...

I did leave out the issue of CSAM storms, because it wouldn't have fit with the light tone of the rest of the post, but it's one of the reasons why I shut my server down.

After New Vector dropped Dendrite, people like me, who were running their own server, have barely seen any of the "Matrix v2" improvements. With Synapse being slow and heavy, and other implementations (like Conduit) being unstable, you can see why some people aren't too fond of Matrix.

Any large enough ActivityPub instance could just as well be targeted by legislation like this. I've heard of ActivityPub server operators that are going to IP-block the UK rather than implementing the required verification, but that doesn't really count as censorship resistance.

I wanted to get them for myself, but it turns out I can't see shit and my prescription lenses would have been too thick for that kind of frame

I'm less enthusiastic about WalletLinker. I feel like some of the discourse surrounding ATProto sounds already too close to that of cryptobros. I fear that integrating ATProto with cryptos further will draw in an undesireable audience. I hope BlueSky won't end up like Nostr.

I'm happy to learn about RedDwarf! I've been thinking of a project based on ATProto, but building an alternative AppView is a lot of work, and I'm glad to see that Constellation seems to handle it just fine.

I'm surprised by how usable it is! It's noticeably slower than the default appview, but so far it seems to be pretty consistent, even for historical data, which is the real achievement!
