So one thing bothers me: If the collection had its original folders and order, and it wasn't being reordered / weeded / altered by the researcher, just folders were being numbered, notes being taken, in what sense was it "not catalogued"

AMNH has a blanket described as Tlingit, from Kruzof Island, with a 1932 accession number. This could be the blanket that held the head. (Maybe they brought in many other blankets from Kruzof Island that year) digitalcollections.amnh.org/asset-manage...

School staff shipped the box and its contents to the Anthropology Department of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. AMNH sent the boys $120 for their find

The middle of the story is in 1931 a group of Sheldon Jackson School students dug out of a cave a carved wooden box containing human bones and, wrapped in a blanket, a human head. They brought it back home, and had uneasy sleep
