I think you’re overestimating the average person’s ability to understand this. Most people I know who are using ChatGPT, for example, many of whom are highly educated with multiple degrees, are surprised when I tell them that it often gets things wrong. Most people are using it without thinking.

They don't seem to understand that most people don't want that and actually DO enjoy interacting with other humans.

Agreed. I would add that another aspact is that most of the "turbo-geniuses" are socially stunted and don't know how to interact with people. It seems like they're creating products like the metaverse and now AI which will enable them to live without having to interact with actual humans.

Except they did go near it. 14 Dem senators (Klobuchar, Warren, Schumer, Baldwin, Booker, Coons, Duckworth, Durbin, Kaine, Reed,Sanders, Slotkin, Smith, and Van Hollen) sent a letter to Trump calling for him to immediately halt this plan.

Not just how. It’s who we have always been. We’ve had a few decades where that wasn’t us, but for most of our history we’ve been a nation of boorish, ignorant, self-righteous a-holes.

The past 8 months has laid bare how may of our institutions are critically broken. My take is that we haven’t had any real tests of our “values” in so long that all the institutional knowledge of how to actually enforce them is gone and nobody is left who can navigate any the current crises we face.

It’s not mystifying at all. The rest of the chain of command is either on board with it and/or they are so reflexively trained to obey authority that there isn’t even an option to question an order (much less actually disobey one).
