I'd not presume to understand a couple's relationship or in-jokes. Every couple has their own private things which may not make sense to outsiders.

I got called Mr. <my wife's last name> all the time at her professional functions, since she didn't change her name when we married and practiced medicine under name.
It wasn't that big of a deal. Just get the names right on the paperwork so the bank doesn't screw us up...
