Reuters identified 4,421 cases since October in which more than 400 federal judges ruled that the Trump administration had detained immigrants unlawfully as part of its mass deportation campaign.

That's almost certainly an undercount, and many cases are ongoing.

The government has struggled to keep up with the pace at which it's being sued, and the pace at which it's losing.

Reuters found more than 700 Justice Department lawyers now assigned to immigration detention cases.

And we found five DOJ attorneys who each appeared in more than 1,000 cases.

The Trump administration's detention policy has produced an absolute avalanche of lawsuits from immigrants saying they were jailed illegally.

There have been more than 20,000 habeas suits since he took office, double the number that were filed in decade before.
