The weird thing is that the answer isn't "have anything to do with Thunderbolts, the next and final film in Phase 5 of the MCU"

I don't think it was a creative decision (though I don't hate it, it draws a line between two technologists that I don't think I've seen before), I think the motivation is "we have absolutely oppo researched this guy to fuck and back, he's not going to blow up in our face"

"The Mercy" is the Hollywood-upped version: Colin Firth! Rachel Weisz! David Thewlis? Ken Stott? Jonathan Bailey! Mark Gatiss? Simon McBurney? Jóhann Jóhannsson!

The real answer is to not bring him back "RIP James Bond, he died when swapping his blood with the Queen went from monthly to weekly to daily"

Yeah this is what I was going to say: the position here is "no-one minded that we jumped back to before all the other Bond films, but we created such a mythos that people will be distraught about a reboot", which is not I think how the average person relates to the shooty kissy guy.

To be clear this is very much out of love, I'm so glad it's back!

I'm glad you're back! It still seems a little cut-down, like I've hit the mobile URL by accident - will the "best of the years" sidebar be back / will the comments be back, at the moment there's a COMMENTS block but no comments and no way to add them / will the "latest comments" finally be back?

I mean, he is still knocking about...

I am pleasantly surprised by the fairness of the GBP in coming to the conclusion that the entirely made-up word Fatherf*cker must by rights be about as offensive as the one that everyone knows.

I just took a photo of the notice, which only says a month or so

A little less conflicted today

(It's public)

I've changed my mind a lot reading down this thread, honestly a little surprised (and surprised I'm surprised) at how much they're the best-suited to my tastes (and of course vice versa).

Probably the Invisibles - in a way it'd be cheating to pick one where their reach didn't exceed their grasp.

I love it as shorthand. "It's Superman. You know - Superman"

Wait, posts, or reposts of a given post? 400 sounds like a good number of posts, people should have to delete something old after that.

I see a lot of them in Edinburgh - mind you, I see a lot of them on the converted old railway tracks, where they aren't really necessary - mind you, I'm mostly on those tracks, because I don't actually want to cycle up and down Edinburgh every day.

Yeah, I just didn't like having to wear the dungarees, I could never remember which pocket the ring was in.
November 1, 2024 at 11:34 AM
(I'm just grumpy today, I don't seethe about it this much mostly, but I caught up on your FT posts, and I thought I'll go dump this in the river of social media where the waters will wash it away rather than a permanent comment)

But its omnipresence (in my cohort) means that a pebble in a shoe is magnified.

"... she brought fellow students Steve Shaw and Roger Huckle, whom Rowland renamed as Steve Brennan and Roger MacDuff, and Rowland named the violin section "The Emerald Express""

I hate it so fucking much.
November 1, 2024 at 11:13 AM
But come on: "He sent Speare to invite Bevington to join Dexys, which she agreed to do, and Rowland gave her the Irish-sounding stage name of Helen O'Hara. Rowland also asked her to recruit two other violinists; ..."

I considered trying to convince them the only Irish trad (ish) song to hit #1 in the UK being largely cosplay would make it a bad choice to play to a half-Irish room, but it was a bluff anyway, the Irish love it too.
November 1, 2024 at 11:12 AM
I had something similar but I think they played it when I was out of the room. I definitely fed the DJs.
