Electricity grid upgrades are central to Europe's future energy security and competitiveness.
To achieve this, it needs to:
1️⃣ Give national regulators a statutory mandate for the energy transition.
2️⃣ Create independent system operators and planners (ISOPs) to oversee grid planning in the public

⚡ Europe’s clean energy transition can only move as fast as its electricity grids.

But outdated regulation and limited oversight are slowing things down. RAP and @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social propose two urgent reforms for national governments to make grids fit for the energy transition.👇

Belgisch nucleair was stabiel hoor doorheen het weekend. Uiteraard na de stop van Tihange 1 die je op 1 oktober ziet.

We even had 3 hours on Saturday when Belgian consumption was entirely covered by renewables.

It may have escaped your attention, but the Belgian energy system has quietly passed an important test. During the weekend of 4-5 October 2025, our consumption was almost entirely covered by renewable energy. And yet the system ticked like a Swiss watch. /

Energy efficiency needs a radical rethink.

Making fossil fuel technologies & processes incrementally more efficient is no longer enough.

It might even perpetuate their use. In my new article I explore how energy efficiency needs to evolve to remain relevant.

Why energy efficiency needs a radical rethink
Energy efficiency has historically been the most significant contributor to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Over the past few decades…

Well, they do hint at some questions that need answering regarding the actions by Red Electrica to foresee sufficient voltage support resources the day ahead and the day of.

Indeed, important data gaps still.

This might be interesting - in the next and final report...
The Expert Panel will also assess – to the maximum
extent possible – whether the most relevant requirements for this incident arising from European and/or
national regulations and contracts – such as those in
the SO GL, the Connection Network Codes (e.g. RfG and
DCC), the Emergency and Restoration Network Code (ER
NC), Synchronous Area Framework Agreement (SAFA),
national regulations (e.g. voltage control and voltage
operational limits) or the TSO-DSO protocol on voltage
control – were fulfilled, or whether any failures contributed to the incident possibly meaning that any future
processes might require adjustment.

The Iberian blackout factual report by ENTSOE is online now:

bramclaeys.bsky.social
Ah, you're right. We'll have to fix that in our upcoming deep dive on how an undefined large scale super reliable baseload technology should get ALL the money ALL the time in order to save us all.
bramclaeys.bsky.social
Today, we get all (?) the facts about the Iberian blackout!
Exciting...
But keep in mind this will be the factual, not final report. The final should come, with recommendations, in another 3-4 months.

Doc should appear here on ENTSOE webpage:

NEW | Surging wind and solar power helped make electricity in Spain CHEAPER than in most European countries.

It's about how narrow the analysis should be of available network capacity for cross-border trade. In the case of Germany this has to be read in the context of the long discussion about splitting the national biddingzone in smaller ones. Right?

What's an "arm" in this context?

Where I live, you have to have the commune install a cable gutter across the sidewalk. But they also roll out charging points in the streets quite widely.

We tried to be systematic, yet pragmatic.

We also of course recognise the importance of energy efficiency and social protection measures such as social tariffs.

Is this the final list? By no means. What would you add?

Schematic to first reduce system cost, then policy cost and finally optimise taxation.
