We had a wonderful guitar piece in our ward (“Hail Mary”) for Christmas as well.

Change in policy was to recognize the variety of instruments available to members worldwide.

We get a new batch of songs released a few times a year. It’s been fun to learn new ones & watch old-timers squirm.

Most folders I’ve seen in chapels are three-hole-punched, so not loose. 🤣

Yes and no. All the new hymns are digitally released. Old hymn book is still used and usually a folder with new ones printed out.

LOL. I genuinely want to keep the dialogue going and “my, you’re really a jerk, aren’t you?” probably wouldn’t be helpful.

I will read the paper, and will certainly reflect. The rationale for persuasion so far certainly hasn’t been “the future”, but has been the value it brings *today*.

That worked. Thanks.

Thanks for clarifying how that landed. I wasn’t trying to argue in disguise, and I’m sorry it came off that way. I’m open to learning your perspective, but I’d also like to keep the tone constructive. I’ll read more and circle back.

I’m philosophically opposed to using anything that supports Google for ethical reasons!

J/K!

But, Google stalls when I try to view the document. I’ll try again later. Certainly interested in better understanding your point of view.

I’m trying to understand your position. We agree on this point.

*path, not oath

It is conceivable that many disciplines will view AI use as a similar core skill in the near future and that it needs to be taught and learned for students to be competitive in that field.
February 14, 2026 at 2:30 PM
So if an accountant or an investment banker had philosophical objections to using computers (or spreadsheet software), business schools should give them a computer-free oath to get a degree and still bestow the same degree on them?
February 14, 2026 at 2:30 PM
Would you argue that using Excel is a shortcut for Accounting students? And teaching them how to use that tool is a disservice?
February 14, 2026 at 2:23 PM
But not by shaming students. But by helping them discover and learn use cases that haven’t been shown to them yet. By reinforcing the principle of “you need to learn how to learn” and developing their desire to be curious and not take shortcuts in that process.
February 14, 2026 at 2:13 PM
It may not be a consensus yet that AI is one of those skills, but it’s not outlandish to expect that it probably will be for most fields. It’s incumbent on educators to help understand and make the argument as to its use cases (and accompanying value) if it indeed exists.
February 14, 2026 at 2:13 PM
If students told us they were opposed to using computers at all for environmental or philosophical reasons, I don’t believe we would grant them computer-free paths for degrees (for most degrees). There are skills they need to learn in order to be competent in that field.
February 14, 2026 at 2:13 PM
…but did my best to help them see how AI can be used in ways to help augment/accelerate their learning (not replace it).

And to see how it can be used constructively within a wide variety of disciplines.

Many (but not all) changed their opinions on how they would use it.

I think the response to the question lacked empathy, but was directionally accurate.

I taught two sections of a freshman honors seminar last semester dedicated to AI and had students who started the semester with similar opinions.

I didn’t tell them they were wrong…

A fantastic article from Yale’s student newspaper last October that I’ve required all my students to read at the beginning of this semester:

Strange New Worlds will make it all better.
If we had to endure Discovery to get SNW, it was worth it.

I seem to recall Trump was opposed to metal detectors on January 6th because he thought his supporters had the right to bring guns to *that* protest.

In one of the videos, you can literally see Renee wave the ICE vehicle past (to follow the other vehicle that had just gone by). She was not trying to block the ICE vehicle.

And I don’t mean that Alabama should be dropped for losing to Georgia.

They should have never been there in the first place because they lost to FSU.
