Like the essay says "The trees give shelter of rain and snow, and they also carry the morning’s light which gladdens the eye. They are exemplars of patience and persistence, of the strength to remain standing in the merciless weather." I found that to be true in my experience too.

More recently, I mostly walked by necessity. But even so, walking was a gift that calmed my spirits and fed my hope in my hardest days.

Walking also created the time and space that I would otherwise not allow myself. I spent many winter days going to the nearest park to observe and journal flora and fauna. Such a readily available and delightfully enriching practice. Always came back home feeling refreshed and vivified.

In the past, I walked by choice most of the time, preferring to walk from A to B rather than take public transport. Walking felt like a vector transforming space into place; each step imbuing meaning in an ongoing conversation between myself and what was going around me.
