I've kind of made the assumption the only reason they made it a paid $5 upgrade was to subsidize the development cost of the 3.0 update (since it's been like 5 years since the last content update).

Game logic is apparently reliant on the 30 FPS cap, from what I've seen online. They would need to rework the entire game logic.
