This is also my indirect, roundabout way of announcing that I got started on Daybreak. I'm on Ch.2 and enjoying it so far; Van has a great mix of serious angst and comic relief. Weird of a comparison as it might be, he feels like a Garo protagonist, and it's a new flavor that I'm liking.

On the topic of Trails, though: I've been doing a cleanup run of Reverie on NG+ with JP VO, and man, did Aoi Yuuki kill it as Renne.
She gets that blend between sassy, theatrical teenager and Enforcer No.XV and the way they bleed into each other at the drop of a hat across without missing a beat.

The soundtrack contributed to at least 65% of my enjoyment, though. I grinned ear to ear when I got to the final fight for Stones Unturned and heard the opening riffs to "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane.
And the remixes in the finale are great:

While I've been AFK, took a breather from the Trails dive to check out Mafia III;
Much as I loved 2, the 3rd more than met my expectations, flowing into an open world setting without losing its tone. It was a great time.
...I refuse to believe it's 8yrs old, though. It cannot have been that long.

Been a while since I've done one of the Sunday Gunpla Posts; I've been spending a good couple weeks working on the 30MM ACVI Orbiter, and I finally finished it this last Friday, and I'm pleased with how it came out. It's simple, but weathering, painting--it was an all inclusive project. Was fun!

Additionally:
It's not the first time it's been done in a Trails game, but there's something still charming about the tutorial messages also giving the lore justification for a gameplay change. Gives me flashes of CS2 and [Rean has attained a new state of mind.]

And the path it takes to get there is just...gaaaahhhhhh, the normal ending to CS4 had already made me cry and it's so great to see it tied back in this way. That whole thing of using everything you have to give and it still not being enough, and having to live on in the bad end...good stuff.

While I've got a free weekend, Trails Dive Update: Got into Reverie during this last spell. There's a lot I like to it, and a lot I'm still on the fence about...but as an epilogue to Trails of Cold Steel?

It's real good.

And I adore *EVERYTHING* about the concept of Ishmelga-Rean.

Also:
Car Nerd Noel is absolutely adorable and one of the best parts of her presence in Azure. She's just a constant stream of Gap Moe through the entire game and it's great.

Oh, while I'm here:
I finished up Trails from Zero/Azure!
It's real good. And Tetsuya Kakihara and Rie Kugimiya did not need to go anywhere near as hard as they did in the voice acting, but they play off each other so well and it's CINEMA.
And:
Thaumaturgical Sector my beloved. Best dungeon. 10/10

(also I went for one of my morning runs down by the lake after a big cold spell here in Texas and got what is probably the best photo I will take of it all year)

In between all the plates to juggle this last while, I got my first model kit project of 2025 done!

I finished up a 30MF Liber Fighter I got for the holidays, turning it into what I dubbed the Liber Blademaster. I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Also, I finished CS3 and CS4. It was a great ride, even with a few stumbles. I really enjoyed the new cast, and especially Juna. She's a great protag and fantastic double act w/ Rean in personality & characterization with some truly outstanding monologues.

PARTICULARLY in CSIII Chapter Two.

New Year PC Overhaul Day 2:

Got all the physical components installed, as much time as that took, and now it's time for another round o' the waiting game. Cable management is gonna have to come another day. My back is screaming at me from how much I bent over today.

Immediate update: thought I'd use my holiday to keep trucking on with backup before I have to fresh install Win10 for the new mobo...briefly forgot about my giant music folder, my smorgasbord of screenshots and a few old device backups.

I'm gonna be here awhile.

I slept right through it after going to bed at 7, but I made it through another year!

Now we just have to do it again.

Got a new project to start '25 off with, though-a super budget $210 overhaul of my 9yr old prebuilt PC!
I'll probably hit HobbyTown to spend my holiday money later this week too.

Last post but while I'm on the topic, got a reminder to take wiki articles with a grain of salt.

I was looking up where the last bike colors in CSII were, and saw it was only in that game. Thought they got rid of it.

...They got rid of Rean's *personal* bike. And New Class VII gets military ones.

It's something that's rare to see; either they magically solve all their trauma, or it restarts with a new group. CSIII takes the most Occam's Razor answer to it:
A) Actions have consequences. Grand actions have grand consequences.

B) The Erebonian Empire has cell phones and mass public transit.

I'm partly rambling about Cold Steel because I started on the third game this last week; I had my doubts when I first saw the setting, but Falcom has been really riding this arc out and I'm glad for it.

It balances the old and new cast really nicely and keeps their growth going.
November 4, 2024 at 12:33 AM
Probably my favorite use of it, though?

Fie humming along with the dungeon theme.

Random aside: I know it's nothing new in RPGs, but I've grown to like the Active Voice system Trails uses while working through it. It's so nice to have characters interacting with each other & commenting on the world without freezing the pacing, and it adds a whole ton of flavor to the traversal.

Speaking of interests: I've also watched Claymore in the time off-that one was good. It was extremely my shit.

And that recurring visual of their awakened eyes glowing in the dark? 10/10, no notes.

Most recent projects, reverse chronological:
FRS Kamen Rider Den-O Ax Form: Bought for 50% off at the local hobby store; fun kit!
30MM Provedel Type-Rex: Third in a trio of "The Expanse" themed model kit projects!
