I'm so glad that I can do all of my work on Linux

I'll probably switch my pc (which I only really use for gaming) to it as well soon, I'm tired of windows breaking constantly and spying on me

Oh you wouldn't believe how much "enterprise" tools are still relying on that

IE7 and excel macros are the backbone of many companies

My immediate thought would be Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2

I mean cmake has a built in option to download stuff (FetchContent), and I've seen it used many times.

Some authors also like combining it with find_package, so if you're missing a certain lib on your system it'll just be downloaded by cmake. Arbitrary build scripts and all...

I see where you're coming from, but to contrast that with e.g. cmake: you're already running arbitrary code in the cmake file. It can do whatever it wants.
Not dissimilar with cargo, you're executing the build files there as well.

I mean that part is pretty easy to check with cargo-license for example

With C and C++ you don't see it because adding a third party library in that ecosystem is just awful. (I'm at the point where we use git submodules...)

it is a real problem and I wish people would be less inclined to pull a dependency for simple things.

I do think this is a natural consequence of having a good package manager. You see the same fragmentation with javascript for example.

You could technically read the ISO standard documents as well, if you're willing to pay for them and don't value your sanity.

cppreference.com is the one place to look

Its still a mess, but thats cause the language is also a mess.

It does have a feature to only show the parts for a specific C++ standard Version, but you'll have to login for that (idk why either).

question marks for error handling

I work mostly in embedded, so Linux and bare metal are my main areas. I'm quite happy looking at other languages, Rust on bare metal ARM has been serving me well and man I'm glad I'm off of C and C++ in this space, but I'm excited to see some friendly competition.

Huh, I wonder how I haven't heard of all of this before but Swift seems to be doing really well.
I guess its a bit like C# when .net core was new and many people still assumed C# to be a windows only thing.
