Yeah I don't get mastodon either. I heard that it was supposed to be super decentralized and you host your own stuff, but I really don't think the average person has physical servers where they are actually hosting their own stuff... at that point how is it different than having your own website?

I definitely understand being tired of big social media. It tires me out too. But maybe we shouldn't all jump ship and abandon each other every time something bad happens? I see some people defending pillowfort with their whole life and like... it's not that srs 😭

Other than that, I think the site looks fairly unpolished for what it is. It feels like a very very early tumblr, which is nice, but it was really clunky on mobile. I haven't tried it on PC yet though.

I think it's amazing that there is a space for NSFW art & photography on the site, but again... that should be opt-in, or at least come with a warning.

I was only there for about 10 minutes and saw a bunch of porn and 18+ content mixed in. It was all tagged properly, but without an account it was all unhidden by default. No blur, no "are you 18" warnings, no ability to opt-in.

I love NSFW art as much as the next guy, but that's a weird default.

I tried the pillowfort demo since some people seem to think it's a magical site that will save us from bsky. It wasn't really that impressive. I'm not sure what the appeal is?

Bluesky is in that golden period where its failures and poor choices in moderation and trust/safety have yet to be exposed by a horde of a million trolls, terfs, and nazis.

The user base is small enough to enforce communal mores, but this fails disastrously at scale.

All this to say, you can do both! You can have the comic hosted for free online AND publish it, and it would literally be fine lol

Literally today I was at the store, they had samples out for the pumpkin & white chocolate cookies, and I never thought I'd like something like that, so I never would've bought them. But I took a sample and immediately put a box in my cart bc it was so good 😭

The difference is like when you go to the grocery store and they offer free samples of stuff you can buy off the shelf. Sure, you CAN grab the free samples and go, but it's a statistical fact that free samples tend to result in more sales! Her mindset is part of why free samples work 😂
