With your grandparents you can do the same and so on. Many archives have digitalised their ancestry records, many have not. It really is all about where you are and where your ancestors were located.

Depends on where you're based. But you basically start with your parents and work your way up the tree. For example, start with your dad, know where and when he was born, go to the archive of that city/region and check his birth record. In there you'll find the names and DOB's of your grandparents
