Got to take some time to play with Illugen for the first time today! I really just bashed around and was able to get to something pretty decent in like a hr!

Felt very at home for someone comfy in UE's material editor!

We did one elemental variation on the above FX, turning it from an Inky feel to a poison/toxic FX...

And we also did a more fire focused FX using a bunch of assets we generated from Embergen (and some RBD's from Houdini)

Last week I finished up @vfxapprentice.bsky.social 's bootcamp taught by @dianasimonyan.bsky.social

Had a lot of fun, learned a lot, and after one last pass on all our FX, they are ready to share!

Back from holidays, and made some great progress today! I was able to get all of my assets tied together with an FX, so my wind system cranks up to 10 when it appears! I don't have it changing the water yet, but it's def giving my whole scene a feeling of cohesion!

Using a noise texture to cull out particles for a more organic distribution! (And to have more control to mask out problem spots 🔪)

Started working on a new scene today, so I can try out some of the new techniques I learned! Specifically, I want to build up a weather system to control the whole scene. So far we have the start to some wind changing the tree leaves, falling leaves, and water pan direction!

Learned a cool new technique for feeding game world values into Niagara to make a more dynamic FX! Super cool and opens a lot of doors 👀

Here's some snow where the wind value increases as you place it higher in the world!

Today I Learned:

You can enable "Determinism" on your emitters to let you scrub your FX backwards in Niagara.

Just be sure to turn it back off when your done so your FX still has random seeds at the end!

Took my first stab at some Shader code today, with GLSL! Not exactly sure when I would use this, but it was fun to explore, and see some of the code beneath the nodes I use oh so often.

Playing with mixing a cloth sim from #houdini with #liquigen tonight. Pretty cool to be able to mix the two together relatively easily. But getting the settings JUST right has been tough...

Either way fun little experiment!

Started watching someone play Bayonetta 3 yesterday, and realized I've never tried to do any attack FX.

Put together my first little procedural tool for UE5 from Houdini today! It's pretty basic, but also super cool to be able to instance objects onto ANY surface automatically!

It took me all, and I mean ALL day. But I finally made my first procedural model, defined in Houdini, but with full customization on the fly in Unreal.

The model itself wasn't that hard. Getting the Houdini Engine plugin to work on Linux was an all day effort though 😩

First real try at a decent Sim in LiquiGen! Pretty happy with it, although I had issues with it exporting velocity errors, meaning motion blur can't be used in animations yet.
All in all a fun study today though! 🌊🌊🌊

Added some heat distortion, and more importantly, the foundation to have my little fireball singe the earth it passes over!

Need to start refining the masks/textures etc, but glad to have the tech side of things blocked out.
