Battery in the grip would really throw off the rod balance. You could account for some of that by engineering rod to be top heavy and choosing an overly light reel, but we’re talking a few pounds of power packs for more than one defrosting….and few of my rods, with reels, even weigh a pound anymore

Probably not. You have a lot of real estate to cover on the rod and reel—it’s going to suck power even at small amounts. Plus, you have sub-freezing cold, which is going to ding the battery life. You’re gonna carry a solid five pounds of power packs, minimum.

You have to transmit the power and convert it to heat. Bluetooth can’t transfer heat (or power). ;)
But you should be able to develop materials with built in electrical resistance that generate adequate heat without much more than fine wire wraps and a small current.

As a member of each group on a regular basis, the rollover point is around 5:30 am.

Gonna need a lot of battery to power it in the cold, and an unobtrusive way to connect a wire to the rod. Could be paired with a heated jacket that holds the batteries, and also plugs in to heated fingerless gloves that can connect to the rod. Could use magnetic charging for waterproofing…...
