110th: Snow John Banville’s dark and impactful crime novel where Inspector Strafford a Protestant investigates a brutal murder of a Catholic priest in a country manor house in 1950s Ireland that leads to hidden secrets and disgust about covering up abuses of priests in name of religion and peace.

Finished #HouseofGuiness which is entertaining and should be viewed as a loose historical drama emphasis on drama. Definitely in the style and spirit of Knight’s #PeakyBlinders but not as polished as that show.

Today’s viewing: #AChineseGhostStoryIII (Ching, 1991) fun Halloween viewing that is essentially a retread of the first film with some minor changes. Tony Leung is great in this as are Joey Wang and Jacky Cheung. #filmsky

Tonight’s viewing: #TheStranglerofBlackmoorCastle (Reinl, 1963) the second of the Brauner West German krimi cycle features a story of stolen diamonds, family secrets and a large masked killer. Really solid film with great atmospheric effects. #filmsky

Today’s viewing: #AChineseGhostStoryII (Ching, 1990) a direct sequel that picks up tax collector Choi San (Leslie Cheung) story as he once again faces the paranormal in search of peace and love. Joey Wang returns as a different character that reminds San of his ghostly love. #filmsky

Second viewing of day: #EvilCat (Yu, 1987) a bonkers Hong Kong horror film that mixes body possession and horror with fantasy in a story about a demonic cat spirit that can possess people and the heroic family who must defeat it. #filmsky

Today’s viewing: #AchineseGhostStory (Ching Siu-Tung, 1987) the classic Hong Kong fantasy/horror film that blends comedy, romance, and action reminiscent of Shaw Brothers in the 1960s and into the 1970s. Very entertaining matched with excellent filmmaking.

109th: King of Ashes @blacktopkid.bsky.social new novel that crackles from first page to last. It is a moving book that uses the trauma of a black family’s past secret to expose how that secret has damaged all of them. A story of love, violence, and choices that people will make to protect family.

106th: The Harvest Festival Murders the newest entry in the Crofter’s Green Sleuths is the perfect Fall cozy mystery. Once more the sleuths face multiple murders all possibly linked to the theft of microfilm that outlines UK food systems, a target of Nazi spies. #booksky
