Bushwick hangs on a Sunday afternoon.
An analog black and white photo strip of me and my friend Danielle, who was refilling the paper on this booth at Brooklyn Film Camera. The first slide, we are smiling gently; the second, we each cast our eyeballs in twisted directions and I have my tongue lolling out; in the third, Danielle looks happy, jaw open and I have hidden most of my face in my tie dye hood; in the fourth, we are being cute I guess, Danielle with her hand folded under her chin and me snuggling in close. Two statues flanking the chrome gate of a Bushwick row house. Instead of the usual twin lions, there are twin bulldogs, painted white and black, seated above beige brick. A closeup of one of the dog statues. An actual dog, seated on a couch, giving me some judgy side eye. She has heterochromia, her right eye brown and left eye blue. She’s cute, her fur brown with little cow like patches, and she has floppy ears.

Three bandmates walking along a trail, somewhere near a lake near a highway in Illinois. Trees, lush greens and warm browns encompass them. The basement of a book and record store in Davenport, Iowa, crates of records everywhere, the album art lining the walls. All reds and greens and fluorescents, one of my all time favorite color palettes right here. The kitchen in the green room apartment at Cactus Club, in Milwaukee, WI. Two types of red and reddish brown brick cover the walls, and in front, a circular table draped with a white tablecloth, floral patterns smattered on top and gently toppling down the sides. An old, sage green upholstered kitchen chair sits below a window with simplly embroidered white drapes, light shining through. There is a grayish blue rotary phone mounted on the wall, its coiled receiver wire dangling. Part of a lit brass chandelier warms the top left of the photograph. (Haunted, in case that wasn’t abundantly clear.) A thicket of winding grapevine on the leaf strewn earth beneath tall skinny trees. More greens and browns. Dappling of sunlight. The also haunted woods of the Wickliffe Mounds in Kentucky.

An excerpt of the transcript from John Darnielle on Jokermen that reads: But over the years, I've become very, very interested in the bridge as the place where the song lives. Like where, and it's also where you're freest as a writer, because nobody's focusing on it. It's like, whereas with the chorus, you do have to think a little about your chorus. I mean, you don't have to, you do whatever you want. But if you're going to bother to write a chorus, a chorus is something that should be the most catchy and memorable part of the song. That's what it's there for. One story I tell is that when I wrote this year, originally there was going to be a rhyme line or a second line to…” Another excerpt, the bold part beginning with “My wife..” and ending with “four times” as he’s actively speaking it: “rhyme line in there, but he was right. He's dead right. My wife also does this a lot where I will say, I'll have a good line and she'll say, well, now the songwriters whose second homes you are jealous of would say that line four times. So that's what the chorus is. But the bridge, the bridge is the place where you get to show off a little how good you are at straying from where you are at melodically and getting back there. You can oculate in the bridge and you can mod back or not mod back. For me, it's both formally, it's a little restrictive until you don't have that long. It needs to be shorter than the verse, most likely. You can write a long bridge, you do whatever you want, but most likely it's four, eight bars, and it's a little space in the Tin…”

A set of Black and White Disposable photos: Here, an unbroken line of geese along the banks of Lake Champlain, fluffy clouds floating above the sand and water and tree lines. Here, a swath of linen drying in the sun in a Montreal backyard, the shadows of branches and leaves speckling through the white fabric as the sun hits it from the other side. The curve of rock and dirt path as it snakes along a lakeside in Illinois, the trees tall silhouettes. The figures of people strolling along ahead of me. Aa dark interior of a record store in Catskill as seen from the back. Someone flips through records on the left, records and tapes line the walls. Spike’s, I think.

A pigeon stands on the ledge of a stairwell alongside the beach at Coney, greys and rusty reds and beiges cast in a slight and sickly tint. A higher contrast shot of the Wonder Wheel from behind low, still green trees. The blues and reds pop, the sky cyan cast. A gently leaning fake palm, looking sweetly drunk next to what I always think of as a large matchstick, on the sand in front of the boardwalk at Coney Island. The water ride I don’t recall the name of, where you can stand and poke fun at the people getting soaked. Quiet and closed, water just barely rippling, lines and curves crossing everywhere.

Sifting through photographs for some completely unrelated submission work, and I find that I often come back to these from a Bruce Nauman exhibit at MoMA PS1. Not submissions, just something to share.

It has been a week since van. I miss van.
Shot through the windshield above the dashboard of our van, the sky smattered with wispy clouds and an old gas station that says “CIGARETTES FOR LE$$” and “SNACKS LOTTERY CIGARS” on the structure covering where the cars used to fill up. You can see a bit of my finger covering the frame on the left because I am just so skilled at the phone photo. Ruffles All Dressed chips in Canada by the steering wheel. Listening to Suuns and 69 km from Montreal… Me driving the van and very very happy to be doing so. There are perfect fall colors outside the windows.

Lead guitarist (Dodgers fan) ripped the bass player for being a fairweather baseball fan and claimed he got this shirt one day earlier.
