Was able to go get a coffee on the other side this morning without it being a whole ordeal of detours or labyrinthian tunnels. I happened to arrive just as the temporary barricades were removed for the first official crossing on the other side, so I guess I was among the first dozen or so to cross.

Can confirm. Turns out if you treat a normal intersection like a normal intersection it functions like a normal intersection.
