Come to think of it the northtman reminds me quite a lot of Oedipus.
I could see them being almost like sister films in some ways like where as one protagonist is obsessed with embracing his fate leading to his doom. The other is obsessed with avoiding his fate leading to his doom.

Like how the Northman really highlights the fact that the saga of amleth was the inspiration for Hamlet. Its very operatic and and the language is big and kinda flowery even though the sagas were quite dry pros wise.
