It's easy to mock. But accessible masculinity appears to be the aesthetic of the new institutionalized terror in our burgeoning $200 billion police state, as ICE disappears immigrants. Members of this goon squad look like the guys who roam around America's dead malls. Yes, the aesthetic affords them powerful obscurity, sowing fear and confusion in the communities they torment; they dodge accountability through the use of facial coverings and unmarked cars. But it also makes you wonder about all the other men who look the same and aren't ICE agents. "You don't know where they're from. You don't have any idea who they are, and they are given carte blanche [authority]," said Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli, author of The Unmaking of Fascist Aesthetics and a professor at UCLA. She likens ICE agents to the Nazi-era Sturmabteilung, also known as Brownshirts, many of them unemployed men and former soldiers who terrorized German towns with chaos and violence. "They were the rabble-rousers and drunks," Ravetto-Biagioli said. "They looked like a bunch of 'bros, as you might say in common parlance, and angry men who felt disaffected by being on the losing side of World War I."

We expect our governments to make these kinds of services accessible to all of us," said Verbeek. "We pay higher taxes and get civilized societies in return. The debate here isn't whether to have these programs, but how to improve them."

If we were to simply listen to the smart voices of those who aren't lost in the hype cycle, we might see that it is not inevitable that Al systems use content without the consent of creators, and it is not impossible to build Al systems that respect commitments to environmental sustainability. We can build Al that isn't centralized under the control of a handful of giant companies. Or any other definition of "good Al" that people might aspire to. But instead, we end up with the worst, most anti-social approaches because the platforms that have introduced "Al" to the public imagination are run by authoritarian extremists with deeply destructive agendas. And their extremism has had a profound chilling effect within the technology industry. One of the reasons we don't hear about this most popular, moderate view on Al within the tech industry is because people are afraid to say it. Mid-level managers and individual workers who know this is the common-sense view on Al are concerned that simply saying that they think Al is a normal technology like any other, and should be subject to the same critiques and controls, and be viewed with the same skepticism and care, fear for their careers.

This northern area has witnessed relentless bombardment, and remotely controlled robots loaded with explosives are operating in there. They ve been literally wiping out entire neighbourhoods. What we know is at least four Palestinians have been killed in this attack, and there are also dozens of Palestinians injured. This shows Israeli forces are attacking people even as they're fleeing following Israel's forced expulsion orders. Because of the intensified bombardment, Palestinians are on the move. The army is using quadcopters to kill people trying to escape their neighbourhoods and using these robots with residents saying every time they explode it feels like an earthquake.

By persisting in not suspending the association agreement despite its clear violation by Israel, in not blocking arms deliveries to that country despite the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza, in not banning imports from illegal settlements despite the decisions of the international court of justice to that effect, by not sanctioning Israeli ministers and political leaders who make genocidal statements, by not banning Netanyahu from using European airspace despite the arrest warrant issued by the international criminal court, and by not supporting the judges of the court and UN officials sanctioned by the United States, the EU and its member states are discrediting themselves in the eyes of the world and undermining the international law and multilateral order they are supposed to defend. While under attack from Putin in the east and Trump in the west, the EU is thus deepening its isolation by cutting itself off from the rest of the world.

The word "ghetto" was not the only Holocaust-era import to make its way into nascent Israeli discourse. Shitrit's colleague at the Minorities Ministry, Gad Machnes, went one step further rhetorically. Speaking at a meeting of the ministerial committee in November 1948, he warned his colleagues that "holding Arab residents in fenced-in concentration camps is no longer justified." Even earlier, in July 1948, Yosef Vashitz, a member of the left-wing Mapam party, offered a chilling admonition: "This concentration is the most important act undertaken regarding the Arabs in the state of Israel. This will determine whether the state of Israel will be a democratic state or a feudal state with medieval customs and Nuremberg Laws." To be sure, "concentration camps" and "ghetto" were lurking presences at this time in a society laden with the fresh traumatic weight of the Holocaust. One may have assumed that there would be an absolute taboo on such language in the immediate aftermath of World War II. But this was not the case.

In recent months, the Israeli regime has perpetrated genocide and apartheid in Palestine, a transnational terrorism attack with booby trapped pagers in Lebanon, thousands of armed attacks on Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, & Iran, the unlawful occupation of Palestinian, Lebanese, and Syrian territory, several extrajudicial executions on foreign territory, the assault on and commandeering of the humanitarian flotilla ship the Madleen, countless attacks on United Nations staff and facilities, and the use of its proxies in Western countries to harass human rights defenders and to corrupt governments. Israel has stockpiles of conventional, hi-tech, nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, allows no international inspections of them, and refuses to ratify the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). And it is governed by a far-right, deeply racist, and fundamentally violent regime that is unconstrained by any norms of international law, international diplomacy, or common morality.

Community, not performance The "bubble" framing also fundamentally misunderstands what most people want from social media. When you go to a knitting circle, are you disappointed that most people there want to talk about knitting? When you join a book club, do you complain that everyone seems interested in books? Pundits and politicians may want to broadcast to the largest possible audience, but most people are looking for community, not maximum reach. Most people aren't looking for a debating arena. They want to talk with people they like about topics they care about-whether that's knitting, local politics, or professional interests. This becomes impossible when the platform owner has hung out a shingle for Nazis, and your attempts to discuss your hobbies get drowned out by fascist propaganda algorithmically pushed into your timeline. That's not "diverse discourse"-it's just a bad user experience.

Electoral politics in the U.S. has long promised a voice to the people, yet in practice, it consistently fails to engage the public in the decisions that shape their everyday lives. Voting every few years for candidates pre-approved by party machines and funded by corporate interests offers little more than the illusion of choice. Meanwhile, the economic system that underpins this political structure -one driven by profit, wealth concentration, and the relentless demands of capitalism— renders it nearly impossible for ordinary people to exert meaningful influence. Most people are too burdened by debt, housing insecurity, precarious employment, and mass media distraction to organize effectively, let alone navigate the labyrinth of bureaucratic systems designed to disempower them. In this landscape, democracy becomes a hollow ritual while real decisions are made in boardrooms, lobbying offices, and closed-door meetings far removed from public accountability.

When politicians lost their gamble that we would achieve herd immunity to COVID, they didn't admit they were wrong or explain that, without any mitigation, our "new normal" would be continual reinfection with a blood vessel, organ, immune system and brain damaging virus. Instead, they doubled down and worked to normalize this continual reinfection- and all the negative downstream outcomes that come along with it, like overwhelmed hospitals, record student and teacher absences, constant illness, record rates of worker sickness and long-term illness, re-emergence of controlled pathogens, dropping test scores, high excess deaths, and increasing heart attacks and strokes among younger people.
