Indeed. 'Wise Ape' no longer applies.
The binomial naming system has received major botanical changes.
Thank you Professor Stace.

Also SSSI with a rare #sedge, and scheduled ancient woodlands near by. 'Development' is always one way.

Root Rage: And rightly so. The Gatwick expansion impacts directly on some biodiversity areas.
Where are you based?

Are you sure it's a guy? Could be female Robin (Erithacus rubecula)

Thanks, will RP tomorrow. Ruddy Turnstone today!
No idea how PK can get so close.

Very niche. Was the Flavoparmelia caperata local?

Had buses zoom past at the Eridge stop! It's a long walk up to Crowborough.
Well done on publishing your blog. It is so important we share information openly.

Amazing! How close did you get? R. Turnstone

That's a pity. In the olden days of SSSI selection they were not considered until 2018! [Ref: Guidelines for the SSSIs (2018) Chapter 14 Nonlichenised Fungi. JNCC]

There are a few interested people down here, which we will be happy to copy fungus posts to.

Who has been finding C. lanius up in Notts and Yorkshire?
A specialist surveyor, or are they really that restricted in distribution?

Do #Fungi get any support on the 'official' lists of priority species in England?
Were always overlooked in the 1980s + 1990s Statutory conservation agencies.

As a working assumption we could use 'Semi-Natural' habitats to indicate most species rich areas in UK habitat terms.
It's concerning that 'principal importance lists' (defined by DEFRA / NE) now take priority.
Reptiles+birds are overlooked, despite providing links to peoples' experience of nature.

... The UKBAP Groups did at least try to quantify and map all the habitats.

JNCC is still sitting on the database underlying that work.
December 5, 2025 at 4:25 PM
It is amazing that over seventy years after the 'Nature Conservancy' was formed there is still no reliable #Phase1 #map of UK habitats.

All these targets and promises, but no baseline to work from. ...

'Urban Foxes' have a very special behaviour.
#BHWF and @pkster101.bsky.social wrote an informative article about their ecology a few years ago.
