Specifically, in the Millgram experiment, those who carried on administering shocks after the screams started ended up going all the way to lethal. Same with opinions?

Outrage sparks engagement. The extremes on both ends thrive on outrage and give 'answers' that can be explained in short clips. It makes sense that the algorithm pushes you to whatever extreme will keep you on the platform, not to something that will require you to research and debate off platform.
