Representing those who ride, walk and those who want to but don't feel safe in the western suburbs of Brisbane.
Well done to Kathryn for organising an amazing protest ride on the Story Bridge today. They're calling for Brisbane City Council to be open about the footpaths reopening, and in the meantime repurpose a traffic lane as a temporary shared path, as they did on Coronation Drive in 2022.

This announcement is the culmination of a long campaign of advocacy, not just by us, but @cbdbug.bsky.social, @space4cyclingbne.bsky.social and countless local residents who ride or want to ride and haven't felt safe. Showing is better than telling, and guided bike rides are very effective!

In 2024, the Queensland State Government and @markbaileymp.bsky.social announced an $800k grant to BCC to design a bikeway along Sylvan Road. This $5m from the @albomp.bsky.social government ensures Council has the funding confidence to get cracking.

Despite being a busy and popular bike route, Sylvan Road rated extremely highly as one of the most dangerous places to ride in Brisbane in the 2023 Bikespot survey. Most regular riders here have a story of a near miss or crash over the years caused by the lack of separation and clarity at junctions.

Sylvan Road has been our highest priority infrastructure project and missing link since we formed in 2015. It links the Western Freeway Bikeway and Bicentennial Bikeway, but currently has nothing but painted bike lanes alongside car parking. Yet bikes often outnumber cars.

Small improvements can make a big difference. This little footpath on Carinya Street Indooroopilly has been widened, making a much better connection for kids getting to and from Indooroopilly State School.

Centenary Bikeway at Jindalee will be closed for up to 30 minutes sometime between 4.30am and 5.30am Saturday November 16 as the project team install the first bridge girder.

If you are planning an early morning ride, choose an alternative route.
