Representatives from Brockwell Live meet local community groups and residents Brockwell Live community meeting, Tuesday, 7 October 2025 The Blog was present at the first of two community meetings held yesterday, when Brockwell Live – the promoters of five music events in Brockwell Park – met local residents and community interest groups. About 30 people were at the 4.30pm meeting, including representatives from Brockwell Live.

Tulse Hill’s South London Botanical Institute (SLBI) becomes Mushroom University for seven Mondays in October and November. You can learn how to identify fungi at sessions with local gardener Fabrice Boltho. Fabrice has worked with Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses and Myatt’s Fields Park. Bring your specimens and photos and he and his friends will teach you how to identify local fungi.

Could you play a key role in Brixton’s Remembrance Sunday event this year? One of the big moments of the local calendar, it will celebrate all those who fought and died for Britain in two world wars and others, with an emphasis on the tens of thousands of Empire and Commonwealth troops who, until recently, were overlooked and forgotten. Volunteers will help with welcoming guests, stewarding and setting up the major event which takes place at the African Caribbean war memorial in Windrush Square beginning at 2pm on Sunday 9 November. CreativeCommons/SecretLondon123 The strange, Cold War-style construction known as the Camberwell Submarine that stands in Akerman Road between Brixton Road and Myatt’s Fields, is representing SW9 in a fascinating new book, out now.  Adventurous Vents was co-written by three Lambeth women who make up the architecture in education charity Our Hut. Since 2004, Lucy Lavers, Judy Ovens and Suzanna Prizeman have led primary and secondary pupils as well as community groups through numerous creative, fun and informative workshops and projects about the built environment, including Stockwell Bus Garage, Brixton's Electric Avenue (see artwork below), Peckham town centre and Crystal Palace Park.

‘I was so relaxed I didn’t reach for my phone all day!’ Local parents took part in a lively wellbeing and creativity event at Brixton’s Ark Evelyn Grace Academy, yesterday (1 October). The free event, organised jointly by Evelyn Grace and Brixton Learning Collaborative, was designed to help parents relax and recharge. Parents from Lambeth primary schools including Loughborough, John Keats and Hill Mead, enjoyed pampering sessions including chair massages and manicures, guided meditation and self-care workshops.

The festival once marked a point in the year when the veil between the living and the passed was at its thinnest and also the end of harvest – so there are few more appropriate places to celebrate it in Brixton than our Windmill that will mark Halloween on Sunday 26 October from 1 to 4pm with a free family event in Windmill Gardens.

Velenzia and Rebecca of Bread & Roses Theatre co-direct the Lambeth Fringe Festival The local festival that "amplifies underrepresented voices" and began life in 2015 as Clapham Fringe increased its reach last year to include numerous small venues in and around Brixton. The brainchild of the team behind the Bread & Roses Theatre (pictured), the Lambeth Fringe this year runs from 25 September to 25 October.

At 9.45am today (21 September) a mature pedestrian was knocked to the ground on the busiest stretch of Brixton Road by a man riding a Lime bike on the pavement. A doctor and a member of staff from a local shop both sat with the stunned victim, who hit her head on the ground as she fell, urging her not to move until paramedics had checked her over.

A meeting of Lambeth council’s licensing sub-committee deferred a decision on a licence for Brockwell Hall in Brockwell Park. It considered 39 comments on the application for a licence – 37 objecting to the application on the grounds of noise, public safety and “public nuisance”. The application had sought permission for activities, including plays, films, indoor sporting events, live and recorded music, performances of dance, and the sale of alcohol.

Playing in the Golden Goose Theatre on 3 and 4 October as part of the Lambeth Fringe, Shoulders written by South London-based playwright Fintan Dineen is described as “a play which asks questions about what men show and hide, about the changing nature of friendship over time and how we let go in the stickiness of the digital age….It’s  a comedic, tender and razor sharp look at masculinity, loss and friendship”

Pupils at a Brixton school today (16 September) met a South London schoolgirl who is the star of a new book about sickle cell disease. My Blood, Your Blood is inspired by Sydenham youngster Angel Salami, who was diagnosed with sickle cell disorder as a four-year-old – the same age as the reception pupils at Van Gogh school by the Cowley estate who will receive the book.

Brixton Immortals Domino Club is hosting a marathon free Black History Month extravaganza and celebration of Black heritage on Saturday 25 October at Clapham Library. A cultural cornerstone of Brixton since the 1970s, the Immortals are inviting local organisations and businesses to hire a stall at the event’s market and cultural exhibition for just £30 per table. The deadline for booking is Thursday 25 September.

This Sunday, 14 September, from 12 noon to 9pm, the newly refurbished Brockwell House will be playing host to a free festival of music and stalls showcasing the impressive talents of our local youth. Two voluntary organisations – Junior Open Mic (JOM) and the Herne Hill Music Festival – have joined forces to put the Stable Yard to good use for a day of great live music and stalls, with a licensed bar, pizza and hot dogs on offer.

Members of the family of Cherry Groce gathered at the memorial to her on Brixton’s Windrush Square to express concern after it was vandalised recently. The attack, in which large amounts of white paint were tipped over the dedication on the memorial, follows the damage inflicted on the Windrush Untold Stories exhibition in early July. © Brixton Media Lambeth council cleaned the paint from the memorial following the attack.

Written by Urielle Klein-Mekongo and directed by Gbolahan Obisesan, Black Power Desk is a musical which sits within Brixton House's Uprising Festival - a season of work commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1985 Brixton Uprising, sparked by the police shooting of Cherry Groce. The title refers to a secret unit within Scotland Yard whose aim is to monitor the Black community in 1970s London.

Janet Baker “No plan. Just a camera. I take pictures of things that probably won’t be here tomorrow. Or things that no one else is looking at. Temporary is magical.” Janet’s words aptly describe Stories, her new show in Brixton’s Tate Library. Representing her work over many years and reflecting her preference for the drama of black and white to the warmth of colour, it is a window onto her passions, her interests and scenes from her life. 

Brixton prison's Clink restaurant Clapham and Brixton Hill MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy has urged the government minister responsible to protect Brixton prison’s Clink Charity restaurant from closure. The famous establishment which trains prisoners is the flagship enterprise of the Clink Charity which closed its restaurant at Styal prisonin Cheshire in July this year. However, the charity is one of several rehabilitation services asked to retender for government contracts in recent years.
