Two Dr Dannys (Dannies?) unite, as @linguisticdiscovery.com is hosting an exclusive sneak-peak from my book on this excellent platform – I highly recommend subscribing to the newsletter, which turns up in my inbox to offer a smorgasbord of linguistic content.
Where did we get the letters of the alphabet from?

And why does English use them so strangely?

Here’s an excerpt from the new book, “Why Q needs U: A history of our letters and how we use them”, which takes you on a linguistic odyssey through the history of the alphabet:

Four days now, and fourth in the alphabet is D.

I took Chapter D as my chance to explore lower-case letters – why we even have the upper/lower-case split, and why equivalent letters can look a bit different with it. After all, a capital D and a d bulge out in opposite directions!

Now, if you'd like to read the book yourself, and find out why indeed Q needs U, Waterstones does currently have a discount off upcoming books like mine...

The code SUMMER25 gets you 25% off a 4000-year story, which is like getting 1000 years for free.

With pride, joy and a great deal of nerves, I'd like to reveal the cover for my book 'Why Q Needs U'!, published by @bonnierbooksuk.bsky.social!

I love the cover, with the endorsement from its first reviewer, who also called it "a wonderful achievement" and "just couldn't recommend it more highly".
