This only matters if you put value on the term "canon". It's a category, not a statement of importance. The singular benefit of something being introduced into canon is that fans of that particular something might get new stories.

We can even bring to the smaller scale of Finn and Poe. They have as much right to a beef with Ben as anyone and I just don't buy that they easily become cool with him (nor would I respect that choice for those characters). The same way Leia never was cool with Anakin/Vader like Luke was.

I believe it can be both of those things you describe at the same time. On the other side of the coin, there is the suspension of disbelief. That the galaxy would be ok with setting a man free who terrorized them for years? Not for me.

Lack of accountability is another thing causing us a lot of problems right now. Ultimately a meaningful portrayal of coming back from what Ben did is going to mean death or life in prison. Neither of which is going to provide the type of ending his fans are interested in.

I don't necessarily disagree with the concept of a story like that, I just don't think Ben is the right vehicle for it even if he wasn't already dead. The weight of his crimes is much larger than anything Frankenstein likely conjures up (granted I haven't seen it but I'm guessing no genocides).

Ultimately, both Anakin and Ben did the same thing. They gave up the lives they wasted so that others could live in the light that they rejected.
Anakin may not have saved Padme, but he saved the last parts of Padme (Luke and Leia). Ben saved Rey. Both at the cost of their lives.

Ben didn't destroy the galaxy looking for that... but he still destroyed the galaxy. Ben gave up his chance at a long and happy life the same way Anakin did just for different reasons.
