Books that are DRM-free will have an unlocked padlock logo on them, and a little banner. Otherwise, assume it has DRM.

Also, when searching you can specify only DRM-free results. That said, I wish it were even more obvious that DRM-free was a lot more normalized.

I loved that he was insatiable in all ways, as if he would swallow up the whole world just to know it better if he could. He made me laugh, but I winced when he joked about the worm. “Baby, don’t worry,” he said. “It’s not a worm.” A doctor he trusted had reviewed the scans of his brain obtained by The New York Times, he said, and concluded that the shadowy figure was likely not a parasite at all. He sighed. It was too late to interfere with what had already vaulted from the sphere of meme to the sphere of screwy legend, but at least I did not have to worry about the worm that was not a worm in his brain.

The "powered by" really stands out, not least of which is that I'd want a system like that to be hard-wired or on its own local network. I'm sure it's only nominally connected, but still.

It's sort of worse for being singled-out. It would be less tacky dress the players like racecar drivers.

Other Factory Entertainment replicas may have their issues, such as modifications to their Next Generation tricorder due to manufacturing limitations and so forth, but the text kerning — and especially the name typo — is the sort of thing that really should have been addressed before final production started.

The word spacing really stands out, and I'm not thrilled by their response (kudos for asking!). The way they reproduced "YARDENGINEERS" and "ENGINEERINGGROUP" look like straight-up mistakes.

Also clearly a different font. It's serifed, sure, but with lots of minor differences. "J" most obviously.
We inquired about the text spacing concerns with Factory Entertainment’s team, who told us this about their review of the original plaque: >>FACTORY ENTERTAINMENT: “On the original plaque, some of the kerning/spacing of letters is quite tight — not missing spaces per say, but just tighter spaced, like a 1/2 or 1/4 space. If you look closely, you will see that the spacing of various words and letters is not fully consistent. >> The gaps between the R I & S in ENTERPRISE for example, but there are several places; we suspect this was indicative of hand-laid hot-metal typesetting used to make the original plaque (which was cast metal). You can also see that the delta symbol is fractionally off-center. We duplicated all this detail as precisely as we could.” Even with this feedback on the matter, there is definitely some room for improvement here — while spacing between “ENGINEERING” and “GROUP” may be a bit tight, it’s still visibly two distinct words on the original prop. Dear lord. However stupid the premise seemed, I was NOT ready for the "substance" of comparing recruitment of Palestinian suicide bombers to "cancel culture" as a tool of the evil left, and asserting that Trump's second term is so awful is directly because progressives won't post on Twitter.
Screenshot reading: What happened? Palestinian recruitment for suicide terror might have flagged, but from what I’ve read, the main reason was that Israel built a big fence around the West Bank and implemented a bunch of other security measures that made it very difficult for suicide bombers to get through. What looked for a while like an invincible weapon turned out to just be another temporary advantage. I think about this when I think about cancel culture. Screenshot reading: The perception that cancel culture was the progressive H-bomb — an invincible weapon that could be fired any time at anyone who didn’t conform perfectly to a set of progressive mores that had only emerged a few years ago — reshaped much of American society in the 2010s. Every organization in the country, from knitting circles to romance novelist associations to sci-fi conventions, had its internal hierarchy disrupted by the fear that disgruntled or opportunistic subordinates would take their grievances online and summon the dreaded cancel-mob against their superiors. Screenshot reading: And so the ranks of the online cancel-mobs were probably also swollen by people who participated in the mobs out of fear that if they didn’t, they too would be canceled. This gave rise to a phenomenon I call ponzi screaming — berating the person immediately to your right on the political spectrum, out of fear that if you don’t berate them, people further to your left will berate you. You have people like the progressive online shouter and failed Congressional candidate Will Stancil berating Nate Silver even as he gets frequently dogpiled and berated by leftists. Screenshot reading: Within this little hothouse world that American progressives have created for themselves, there’s not much to do except try to cancel each other. Meanwhile, the broader country is moving on without them, and not in a good direction. One of the reasons opposition to Donald Trump’s executive overreach and harmful policies has been weak in his second term in office is that progressive writers are hanging out on Bluesky trying (and failing) to cancel Matt Yglesias and Nate Silver.

Recently watched this b-grade action movie from 1997 called "Drive." The movie is fine enough for what you'd expect, but when she shows up for about 15 minutes in the middle she *completely* steals the show. Charisma vibrating off the screen. It was kind of nuts.

I recently discovered Logos-World.net, which is amazing, and this pretty much says it all. What a remarkable improvement on the previous two designs.
Four logos for Los Angeles. The first one is labeled "Before 2012" is a minimalist font with the letters in "Los" colored yellow, red, and green. The second, labeled "2012-2018" is a minimalist, black hand-written script with the word "discover" above it. The third logo, labeled "2019-2021" removes the word "discover" and renders the script with a light-blue drop shadow. The final logo, labeled "2021-Present" stylizes the lettering much more pleasingly to the eye while adding an 80's-style pastel gradient that moves from orange through red, pink, blue, and green. A yellow sun sits above "Angeles," as part of the gradient, with brush lines that evoke both the stylizing of the text and the horizon of a sun setting over the ocean.
