THE KINK IN THE TIMES’ POSITION ON UNIVERSITIES AND FREE SPEECH

Why is a national newspaper obsessing about student societies and quoting extreme pressure groups? I think we all know the answer...

This is not just about me or my book. This is about respecting and valuing actual journalism. Our ideas, our contacts, our ethics, our reputations, our hard work – that’s how stories like those in my book first come to light. If you don’t respect or value any of that, what do you respect and value?

The process is the thing. I find it infuriating that people don't understand that. The point of summarising something isn't just to produce an object called a summary, it's to drive your own understanding, and apply your values to the information you're summarising.

The irony of AI mimicking a 'Leger' painting to illustrate the point. 🤦 Here's "Dans L'Usine" from 1918, where people become machines:

This is a list of ways to do a really shoddy job as a journalist. As a friend just said to me, if you get AI to summarise a big report you’re almost guaranteed to miss any story that might be lurking in the detail. www.journalism.co.uk/news/how-can...

No, AI cannot replace original journalism. But it can remove some of the everyday tedium so you can focus on what you do best

Walked past a pub tonight where a band of young guys where hacking their way through It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock’N’Roll) and it was a truly glorious thing. You’ve got to especially appreciate how they stuff way too many syllables into a line.

Like Lyra Mckee, firebrand US activist Charlie Kirk died totally unaware of how many ‘best friends’ he had in the world...

Systems failing ordinary people are now a feature not a bug.

I’ve long been fascinated by how employment tribunal awards are reported in the mainstream press. This is a brilliant investigation into how the system is utterly failing people.

🚨 Our new investigation out today reveals how thousands of people who've taken their bosses to employment tribunals & won, never got paid, even after they approached the government for help.

This has serious implications for the Employment rights bill.

Thousands of rogue bosses get away with not paying tribunal awards
The government scheme ‘enforcing’ money owed to workers has been unsuccessful in a staggering three-quarters of cases
