1) some gop donors do want greenland

2) gop officeholders don't want Trump to fund their primary challengers

The reason GOP pols love trump specifically is he gets just enough irregular voters to vote for republicans in general elections that it tips the scales in their favor. So, they’re in some trouble when he goes away, but the core of the party is probably going to be just fine, unfortunately.

They have certainly used Trump, but structurally the vast majority of the party organizations below the RNC have been owned by the religious right for a decades now. I doubt that’s changed very much, and most of them will move on to the next thing to stay in power.

Not that Schmitt or his staff gaf, but the frontier was the idea that any idiot could go out, make a claim, and, if lucky, get rich. E.g., silver prospecting in Nevada.

This is a lot more like Hawaii, where just a few rich guys already own it & want the USG to help them exploit their holdings.

Oh I don’t mean he has no power, I mean he has not developed the skills to use power to do violence on the scale he envisions
January 17, 2026 at 8:44 PM
Yeah plus Miller is just a hype man. He left his Senate job to warm up audiences at Trump rallies. Ever since, he’s only ever worked for incompetent people intent on using him as a propagandist, so he hasn’t learned anything. He’s in a very similar situation to Bari Weiss.

I mean, he didn’t get that the gigantic White House east wing “ballroom” he had an architect design would dwarf the rest of the complex until, months later, one of his friends pointed it out.

Yeah they’re laser focused on spectacle, but most of this stuff even fails as spectacle. It’s all too small. Trump doesn’t realize how small it all is because his mind can’t grasp differences in scale. Running the fed gov like a family business, or thinking Greenland is huge—these are scale errors.

being old enough to remember when bombing Iranian nuclear facilities (remember that?) was going to change everything, I think they simply aren’t capable of following up in any meaningful way on any foreign adventure after the first two weeks
January 17, 2026 at 6:47 PM
Or Ron Lauder got worried about his Greenland minerals portfolio and got on the phone
January 17, 2026 at 6:40 PM
after all this time, how are so many still so stupid? trump has the mind of a toddler. he doesn’t have “concerns“, only desires. do all these people spoil their children too?
January 17, 2026 at 4:12 PM
wait wtf is a daith?

oh. huh. hope you get some relief!

i was thinking of another widely reported example at the Times, the reporter Landon Thomas, whose personal friendship with his source Jeffrey Epstein was thought to have compromised his reporting; he quietly left the paper in a way that suggested embarrassment but not journalistic malpractice
January 17, 2026 at 3:19 PM
there are never any serious consequences for dicking around with sources tho, it‘s considered bad form at worst
January 17, 2026 at 12:18 PM
See, this is why I got mad when Kamala’s campaign hired him. He’s living in the past.
January 16, 2026 at 9:42 PM
then aim better I guess?
January 14, 2026 at 2:26 PM
Indeed, cutting funding to states and cities is one of the things he has consistently lost on, again and again

parents are idiots

kid: “my parents are taking me to Tokyo for spring break”

me: “that’s a v bad idea because you‘re already behind on everything & you‘re gonna be exhausted”

kid needs an extra week off to recover from the jet lag, doesn’t finish

final grade: D
