Linguist, reader, knitter, video gamer, Canadian (in no particular order). Thinks a lot about auxiliaries and pronouns, Stardew Valley, and books with magic and/or spaceships and/or kissing in them. Experimenting with context collapse. (she/her)
Oh my gosh, this is the kind of object that just lurks on our shelves, and that I can't bring myself to dispose of: a tin full of Canadian pennies (last circulated 2013), random international coins, a novelty magnet, a bottle opener keychain, and a padlock. Into the "to be packed" pile it goes!

I started this a few months ago but just could. not. cut. straight 45-degree angles. I told my mum about my struggle, and she was like "well yes, you need a mitre box."

I had never heard of such an object, but indeed! They are cheap and make straight cuts SO much easier.

Upon reflection, it was an exciting choice to make something l-shaped as my first ever mitred-corner project. But I feel very accomplished!

As requested by @absp.bsky.social, here is a photo of the final stuffing product! Probably I put more mashed potatoes in than absolutely necessary, but it is tasty like this!

Every few years I decide I'm going to make the ancestral stuffing/dressing recipe. It is so good, and has only 5 non-herb ingredients, but is a bit of a pain because I don't otherwise keep bread around, and have to plan in advance so it has time to go stale.

Of course, right now I'm at the "everything is a chaotic disaster" stage of organizing. I slightly regret agreeing to inherit 2.5 people's worth of miscellaneous dance publications.

Finally, enjoy this garden of socks I knit before I realized that I don't actually like wearing hand-knit socks (the stitches are too bumpy). If anyone has suggestions for what to do with these please share—they're a bit too worn to frog, probably.

I am quite proud of this hat, because I charted the feather pattern myself, but I don't wear it very often. I knit it to match the mittens in the foreground.

I have knit objectively too many cowls, because I don't actually like wearing cowls, but here is a grey-and-teal striped cowl that I like quite a bit (but still never wear). Pattern is Foolproof: www.ravelry.com/patterns/lib...

While I gird myself for another couple hours of Ravelry updates, please enjoy the following sampler of finished and semi-finished knit objects.

First up: my Fiddlehead Mittens! Their mismatched interiors bring me disproportionate joy.

For the first time in years I'm going through all my yarn and trying to categorize it and store it sensibly, so I have some chance of knowing what I have. Pictured here, maybe 1/3 of the total?

It's pretty warm up here, but my sister and I have taken the ferry up the coast and it'll be a good day. Currently getting a very cute coffee:

I dream of one day posting about visiting Vancouver without feeling weird about sneaking in and out of the city without seeing my friends, because all my time is taken up with family nonsense.

(This was originally going to be a post about how much I like the SeaBus)

As thanks for double checking my IPA, please enjoy a photo of the resulting cake (I only piped the red letters, the rest was done by the much more talented bakery employees)

Slightly more commercially available is the Montreal 1642 tartan, created for Montreal's 375th anniversary (in 2017). This is what comes up when I try to Google the McGill University tartan, but it's nice! (www.standrews.qc.ca/montreal-164...; www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetail...)

Next the McGill University tartan, which is restricted (you can't weave it without permission from McGill) but which I can't find any image of other than the one from the tartan registry. (www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetail...)

First up: the Vancouver Centennial Tartan, registered in 1986. Definitely the tartan I would most like to own a sash in, if only that wouldn't require having it custom woven. (photo: www.flickr.com/photos/vanco...; www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetail...)

It's the first day of @wiscon.bsky.social! The all-online con starts tonight at 6pm Central with readings from @naomikritzer.bsky.social and @andreahairston.bsky.social—still lots of time to register!

A blustery coastal start to the May long weekend, which we 100% forgot was happening until we got to the dock to find that everyone else was *arriving* on the island. But we departed with a sense of accomplishment (and ~6 large bins of trash)!

Despite the many challenges of this trip, it is so great being on the Sunshine Coast again after many years.

Thanks to the cleansing power of fire, day 1 of clearing out my late stepfather's off-grid residence went more smoothly than it could have.

I was going to ask you all whether we agree yet on whether the Canadian Shift and the Californian Shift are the same change in progress, but a quick Wikipedia check suggests that we do, and it's called the low-back merger shift. So that's cool! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-Bac...

Got a new phone, please enjoy the last pics I took on old phone, the first burst of spring in Vancouver.

A couple people in the replies know this one, so here's Moon Mist in all its blue, purple, and yellowish-white glory!
