"Never attribute to malaice that which can adequately be explained by ignorance."
It's a small victory, but the war to make votes matter goes on. Getting PR is going to seriously elevate our democracy and end these broad churches who ultimately represent no one and alienate everyone.

Basic understanding of the realities of international trade, how immigration actually happens or how global politics works would tell you that Trumps policies are dead on arrival, but, that's not how the average voter actually sees them unfortunately, they don't get it and they don't trust experts.

Lefty politicians need to get mad like Trump, the difference is they can do it and deliver facts and reality. Trump wasn't elected because of a Policy position, he was elected because he shouted louder than everyone else, told everyone what the Dems were going to do and told why he'd be better
November 28, 2024 at 9:08 AM
The issue was Trump represented an attack on the establishment (even if he's from the very establishment he's against) meanwhile Kamala and other Dems in general felt like empty suits, nothing felt genuine, what Trump said was awful, made no sense and was factually wrong, but, people felt something

I assume other assets i.e. Tractors, Equipment etc don't get a special tax wrapper.

Average UK farm size is 202 Acres and at £11,150 per acre, the average value of a farm will be 2.3M so Clarkson's farm which is both in a pricey area and has around 1000ac is about 5 times the average. Andrew Lloyd Webbers Farmland is twice that. I wonder how much large holding skew things
November 27, 2024 at 10:53 AM
The value of farmland is likely inflated due to its value for IHT avoidance.

Also, it's more than 2M if there is a farmhouse on the land, they get the statutory 325K per spouse so it is almost 2.7M.

Thatcher believed that people who earn money should keep it, and the state shouldn't take money from people.

In this case, she'd likely have said that by not taxing farmland, the next generation could put this money towards new equipment etc.

She was likely wrong, but, that's not a surprise.

I'm more cynical, I think there can be ethical business, but, these ethics won't come from the companies themselves, they will come from the consumer and more importantly, legislature.

100% lose-lose position, saying he will be arrested hurts relations with Israel & will guarantee BN will never come to the UK. Saying he won't be arrested hurts relations with other UN nations. It would be outside the HomeSecs area to commit the UK to what is in effect also a foreign affairs issue.

Social clubs for young people would go a long way to stopping a lot of this crime. Improving economic opportunities is much harder, but it will decrease crime further.

Locking up low-level criminals will set them back and commit them to a life of crime or at the very least create an uphill battle.

As long as the capacity to use gas exists, the marginal fuel cost will continue to impact our bills, this is why the transition will help, but, reform is needed so our bills reflect the price of the energy we consume.

The energy mix in the UK is comparatively cheap despite us paying high prices.

Some countries ended immigration and/or had enforced quarantine for new arrivals. This stopped many mass outbreaks, it then led to lower vaccine uptake as they didn't have the fear of lockdowns motivating them to get vaxxed.

We have the opportunity to become a green energy superpower, and Brits will still be paying through the nose due to the current system they use to calculate the cap.
November 22, 2024 at 7:30 AM
It'd ridiculous that whenever the cap goes up, the energy companies just match it. They use the most expensive energy source to work out how much the cap should be, too. We'll always pay more than we should until it's reformed.

Such a good list!

I think it's only the propaganda aspect, previous generations of wealthy people could only afford news papers then the next generation TV stations and now Social Networks.

If Twitter goes into bankruptcy he'll just move his grift to another platform.

Elon sees Twitter as the town square where everyone's equal and has an equal voice, then he wants to hand himself a megaphone and while he's at it give people who he agrees with megaphones albeit less powerful than his own. Then he can say, his views are mainstream and you're the fridge weirdo.
