I think of how ripped apart life was from the centuries of Czech normal to the happy progressive but individual new life in Canada.
I think about how I am fortunate to not have known war in that context in my 56y.

He met my grandmother, they had a couple kids, headed to Canada and Sudbury, built a humble life working in the Inco smelter and giving back to his new community. Never went after Nazi reclamation, never hate for what brought him to Canada. Home was Canada and this is what he was as a Canadian.

He had a German engineering degree and spoke 4-5 languages but after sneaking out of his homeland with brother and cousin and family friends sleeping in abandoned buildings eating horse, found himself as an immigrant learning English in wartime Britain with a heavy accent.
