Racism exists everywhere. An African American friend from Illinois told me when she moved South: in the Midwest, they’d stab me in the back, down here (we were walking in Charleston) we know where it’s coming from. It’s out front and blatant.

After I earned my doctorate, I was awarded the first post doctorate fellowship awarded by Avery African American Research Center. I learned more about the history of black schools in SC and i gained greater awareness about the impact of racism on education when I taught at a university in Texas.

SC was mired in poverty and Ben Tillman and his ilk did everything to keep us that way. We needed rich Northerners, who bought historical plantations. White political leaders refused to allow blacks in their schools so they welcomed Rosenwald who invested his Sears Roebuck fortune in education.

Hmm. There were public schools in the larger towns, like Charleston in post Civil War, operated by the city. Rural white students attended academies attached to churches. There were multiple Rosenwald schools for blacks across SC and the South. Are you calling Julius Rosenwald a carpetbagger?

SC has NEVER valued public education. Only poor white children went to public schools as blacks were banned until late 1960s when schools began to integrate, after the Brown decision. 1000s of private academies—Christian schools popped up and drained many whites out of the public schools.
