“On Photography” is probably my favorite book about the same subject, I read the « câmera lucida» more than I probably should, and yet, Sontag’s book caught me more. With the death of Salgado, whom she dislike and I admire, time to read her last essay “Regarding the Pain of Others”.

For the last two hundred years, democrats have been trying to graft ideals of popular self-governance onto the coercive apparatus of the state. In the end, the project is simply unworkable. States cannot, by their nature, ever truly be democratized. They are, after all, basically ways of organizing violence. The American Federalists were being quite realistic when they argued that democracy is inconsistent with a society based on inequalities of wealth; since, in order to protect wealth, one needs an apparatus of coercion to keep down the very “mob” that democracy would empower.

It was often very laughable, but you can’t mock it and expect it to work. You have to buy into it. I mean, the vulnerability of human beings is always very interesting to me. We’re all vulnerable. It doesn’t matter who you are. It doesn’t matter how tough you are, everybody’s vulnerable. But it’s how boys are brought up, how men are expected to behave, how someone like Burroughs was expected to behave. He’s on the hunt for lust, for love, for whatever. He wants to fuck. He wants to fall in love. He wants everything that city can give him. So he’s a kind of artificial human being walking around, maybe.

In the right-wing libertarian version, ethics disappear because human beings, if they make their history properly, are authorized to make it by behaving as if they were in the jungle: they are not responsible for the consequences of their acts, in particular any inequalities they intensify, which are even welcome. Yet, without responsibility there can be no ethics. It matters little then that some, many even, of these right-wing libertarians claim to be Christian believers. Their religion is, in reality, amoral and tends even to become a simple social convention, hardly more than the expression of a singular community. This is perhaps a possible interpretation of religion, but it remains questionable to say the least.

My thoughts kept circling back to that baby elephant whose skeleton we saw on our first walk. The way its heart must have lurched when it felt the claws of the tiger, the weight of its hunger. And at first, every single one of my thoughts was about feeling sorry for the baby elephant. But then I started weighing the cuteness of baby elephants against the tiger’s need to eat. How absurd it is to use the metrics of sympathy to understand this encounter. And even more absurd was whatever it was that made me think my opinion on this was important. Nature is indifferent to the cuteness of baby elephants and the overwrought emotions of biophobes.
