🧵Coal in the US was mostly dying because of cheap natural gas beginning in the 2000s. Then cheap renewables began to clobber it in the 2010s. It is a filthy power source and horrible emitter of greenhouse gases. There is zero economic justification for this & it will amount to corporate welfare.

$Generation of electricity by source in US, 1950-2015 Coal held steady at about 50% until 2000, with natural gas, cheaper and abundant because of fracking, rose up, passing coal at 2015. Natural gas is cleaner and releases less carbon dioxide per energy output$ Cost of energy in dollars per megawatt-hour 2015-2023, projected to 2030. As of 2019 wind and solar were cheaper than coal, natural gas, and as of 2023, coal was nearly 2x more expensive.
