Winding down a shitty year in my favorite place in the world: a movie theater. And every theater is *packed* for STRANGER THINGS, which is so cool to see.

It’s cold and snowy and miserable here to end the year, but I’m seeing Stranger Things in a theater tonight and until then I have this very delightful book from Deborah Levinson that’s giving off major Janet Evanovich and Finley Donovan energy.

Second annual solo Christmas movie outing for MARTY SUPREME after a nice meal of Chinese food. Time with family at the holidays is nice, but don’t underestimate the joy of holiday time by yourself.

Taking a break from Agatha Christie movies for my favorite Christmas movie of all time.

Christmas always feels like Agatha Christie season to me, and I’m starting this week with one I’m shocked I’ve missed for this long: Evil Under the Sun. Star-studded cast and screenplay by Anthony Shaffer. What’s not to love? Will probably follow up with the companion Death on the Nile.

Robert B. Parker changed my life as a writer and my early books were directly influenced by him, but Ross Macdonald was always the high standard for me along with his most direct student, Sue Grafton and Robert Crais who always felt more influenced by Macdonald than Parker to me.

The last Phillip Marlowe novels I read that weren’t written by Raymond Chandler were Poodle Springs and Perchance to Dream back was I was in high school. But @damedenisemina.bsky.social is one of my favorite writers, so when I came across this I was excited to read it.

The Beast in Me on Netflix is fantastic. The setup sounds like a generic domestic suspense story, but its got a Patricia Highsmith vibe I really dig and the character work is stellar.

The last week or so has been incredibly stressful mwntally and emotionally, so I’m unwinding with Taco Bell and After The Thin Man.

What perfect album came out the year you turned 16?

Some days when you're writing a PI novel you need on the nose musical inspiration.

Thinking about Wake Up Dead Man inspired me to catch up with a classic. It’s like Stephen Sondheim got to write a Columbo episde.

Just started this one and goddam if @jordanharper.bsky.social isn’t already topping the brilliance of his last one. Can’t wait to get grimy and uncomfortable as I dig in further.

FYI, fountain pens and typewriters are distraction free without a hint of AI in them.

Writing longhand in a restaurant the way god and David Mamet (before he went batshit) intended. I’m using a nice writing pad as @johnrogers.bsky.social intends instead of my cheap legal pads as well.

The weather is gorgeous out, my meds are working right, I look good and feel good, so I wanted to document it.

I’ve been a big @dswinson.bsky.social fan from way back and love his mix of Pelecanos and Michael Connelly style, but this one is more rural and small town but just as great.

I’ve been sick and miserable on and off for the last few weeks due to the flu and a medicine change and today is the first day in a while I’ve felt close to 100%. That means it’s time to play jazz records and power clean the house.

This is 49. I’m tired, I need a haircut, and my therapist is late for my appointment, but I’m surviving and that seems to be an epic accomplishment these days so I’ll take it.

My journal is a Midori MD ruled notebook and I use this Rhodia pad for noodling and brainstorming, but for generating daily pages I go through too many to spend a lot of money. I scoured forums until I found out about sugar cane paper and fell in love. I can get a pack of 3 for $12

I mostly use my Platinum 3776 for longer writing sessions and sugar cane paper legal pads, which are a dream for fountain pens. I bought myself a TWSBI 580 Diamond for my birthday and some Diamine Writer’s Blood ink that I’m waiting to arrive. Looking forward to trying my first piston filler pen.
