Unlike many of Flock’s cameras, Flock’s Condor cameras track people, not vehicles.

The exposure highlights the fact that Flock is not just surveilling cars—it is surveilling people, and in some cases it is doing so in an insecure way.

Shifting resources from punishment to systems of care is both **extremely** popular among Democrats, Independents, and Republicans, and it's consistent with the overwhelming social scientific evidence. It's one of the clearest policy decisions around.

THREAD. Has anyone ever told you that we can't reduce the size and power of the police, prosecutor, surveillance tech, and prison bureaucracies because it's not popular? In my latest newsletter, I debunk that myth. equalityalec.substack.com/p/convention...

The decline in gun violence in our city is a great story we can all celebrate, but a related and important story is that arrests are also down compared to the previous decade, writes Arne Duncan.
Arne Duncan: Community violence intervention is working in Chicago
Chicago neighborhoods where community violence intervention is most active have some of the largest declines in gun violence in the city.

The U.S. poverty line for a family of four is $32,150.

However, investor Michael W. Green argues it should be more than four times higher, a threshold that would classify most American households as living “in poverty” by his measure.
An investor called $140,000 the new poverty line. Experts disagreed but said he had a point.
Michael Green’s tally of the costs of raising a family in the U.S. today is going viral, even if some economists scoff at his math.

It is very rare that we have a deep debate in any media setting where prominent pro-police advocates are forced to defend their views. I tried my best in this fascinating and contentious argument to hold those views up to scrutiny. open.spotify.com/episode/5zV5...

Cops Used Flock to Monitor No Kings Protests Around the Country
A massive cache of Flock lookups collated by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) shows as many as 50 federal, state, and local agencies used Flock during protests over the last year.

The premise of this article--and nearly this entire genre of Copaganda--is that the identity of the police chief, supposed differences between different chiefs, and the things police do matter for "crime." This is untrue. It's like climate science denial. Safety has root causes.
The New York Times today calls the NYPD Commissioner "a data-centric billionaire heiress who has sharply criticized laws to relax bail." This like saying someone is a "data-centric oil company executive who has questioned global warming."

I think I need to stop being constantly surprised by how little imagination one needs in order to accomplish a kinder more caring world. Why? Because the solutions already exist somewhere either geographically or historically.

Hot take: a four day work week is a concession to the fact that it should really probably be a three day work week.

But also maybe you’re a small business owner and you’re worried you can’t afford to pay a livable wage (that’s a whole other issue) if you lower the cost of living by say advocating for taxes to pay for -a bunch of stuff like 1/2
November 8, 2025 at 5:23 AM
Another reason for a livable wage: if you own property and you want housing prices to stay up, make sure most people can afford your expensive houses, or really housing in general.

Hot take: we need to stop looking for partners that make (x) figures and we need to start demanding a living wage and equitable pay.

Mamdani has prioritized Public Safety throughout the campaign. By refusing to hire 5,000 more police, as proposed by Cuomo, he is saving the city hundreds of millions of dollars that can now be spent on real public safety. www.cityandstateny.com/opinion/2025...
Opinion: Mamdani’s proposed Department of Community Safety would be a win for New Yorkers
The proposal is well-grounded in existing best practices, and there is wide support for it among the public and City Council.
