Last thing I remember is that I called Hypnos and hoped that he would answer and not Thanatos because I was so lost in this I-don't-remember-how-to-fall-asleep thing that I imagine I could very well fall into the wrong darkness.

My protagonist is quite formal and has a poetic flair, so "departed" could fit him, but in this scene he's freaking out and suspecting that either a miracle happened or he has gone insane, so he's using simpler words to avoid his mind bluescreening on him, haha

In Spanish it would be "El hombre a mi derecha se fue". No right-left clash, no ambiguiety, just a simple straight up normal sentence.

I'm currently translating my new novel from Spanish to English to reach more readers. These types of situations force me to go back and change the original.

English has a great flow and the different structures it allows can give you such beautiful sentences, but it can also be so messy.
