in his worldview, everyone is alone in the end. All of which stems from his own disregard for humanity. And he fears he too is replacable. So the closest he comes to feeling genuine love & connection & being appreciated as an individual is making this one guy hate him with every fiber of his body

But most importantly, Makishima is an intrtesting antagonist, and I always wished there was more focus on how he came to be who he is. I like how he carries this profound sadness that even the most individualistic people are replacable, and thus to him there are no genuine relationships,

Anyway, while the target audience is very clearly teens (when it aired I was 16, so thatchecks out), it's still sufficiently mature at times that I did want to watch it.
It actually presents some interesting food for thought about humanity & the meaning of life
