my long-winded thoughts on last night's episode of 9-1-1 which turns into an entire character analysis on eddie diaz 🫶
After having some time to be sad about abuela, I do think this is my favorite episode of the season I think this topic could've been explored w/o abuela's death, but I understand the choice to do so. A main facet of Eddie's character is that he represses his emotions. Grief is one of the only paths that allow his emotions to break through that repression. I do want to see Eddie make more progress into expanding beyond grief, but we have seen glimpses- Eddie choosing unrestrained joy during the risky business scene, for example. But I understand that grief is still his primary avenue for emotionality. And this is likely because it is a strong emotion, but also because it is a culturally/societally acceptable emotion. He's allowed to be sad about his dead wife, his fallen comrades, the deaths of his captain and grandmother. Grief is one of the only circumstances where crying wouldn't threaten his masculinity. Eddie's psyche is a manifestation of this struggle he feels- between what he believes he's supposed to do, what he's supposed to be and who he actually is or wants to be. Eddie does his best to fit into certain roles he thinks his family or his culture require of him- the dutiful son, the grieving widower, the devoted father, provider, the god-fearing "man of the house," the stoic. His rare moments of emotional outburst (outside of grief or entangled with grief) are often a fear response- one of panic or anger- when he feels that he has failed to meet the requirements of these roles. Eddie has enough self-awareness to question the validity or value of these cultural/societal roles, seen in his criticism of the church, confrontations with his parents about his upbringing, his insistence on raising Christopher differently, etc, but he clearly still feels the pressure to adhere to them, and they influence his behavior and beliefs subconsciously. Sometimes I even think this is where his frustration with Buck often stems- because Buck tends to defy the roles that Eddie uses to structure his identity. Particularly, Buck is not good at ignoring his emotions, sometimes to his own detriment, and all of Eddie's defense mechanisms are aimed at emotional repression. This causes a clash between them at times. As someone who grew up in the evangelical church, I relate so much to Eddie. Even though I'm not Catholic, or Mexican, or even a man, I know what it's like to be raised in a culture that demands adherence to particular roles, and furthermore, ties your worth and your inherent goodness to your adherence to these roles. I am achingly familiar with how this pressure shapes a person's psychology and identity. So I love episodes that explore that. To me, this episode is more about Eddie's spirituality and sense of belonging than a return to organized religion- one where he explores what it means to feel connected with his culture without feeling restricted by it or rejecting it altogether. What I fear, is that Eddie will slip back into what is most familiar- limiting his emotional experience to grief and not expanding/ testing who he is outside of what is acceptable to others. What I hope is that 9-1-1 will continue to push Eddie to open his heart to all emotion, his mind to sincere reflection on who he really is, what he really wants, and who he wants to be, free of what is expected of him.
