You have to remember that due to edpol, the people most likely to pay for a service are the people least like to cancel it over Elon Musks wishes. Netflix will know their own numbers so we will see how much power Elons tantrums truly have once they release them at the end of the quarter.

The real test for this counterfactual is going to be the US/China deal. They retaliated and so far the EU has half the tariff rate that China got.
August 6, 2025 at 11:24 AM
Even if there were massive political support for this, Switzerlands processes are too slow for this to matter before Trump leaves office.

Also the only reason these gold exports are so high is because everyone in the world except the US uses kilogram goldbars and the US uses 400 ounce ones and Switzerland is more or less the only place where they can be reforged from one to the other.

The SNB is independent, stuff like this might work in the USA but the federal council cannot just take up the phone and tell Martin Schlegel to dump the dollar.

I think whats interesting about this case is that it shows the limits of the American "regulation via courts" system as Google now has to open up their app store and payments to competitors while Apple gets to keep theirs closed.

My bsky feed is very quiet and sane, that thread was genuinely the first time I glimpsed at that other side of bluesky people keep hinting at. Incredibly toxic replypeople under there.

Why was her term up in January? Aren't these 14 year appointments and she was nominated by Biden...

If we wanted to have more power in negotiations we should suck it up and join the EU, but it will take some time to sell this to the populace.
August 1, 2025 at 2:26 PM
Because the government cannot decide who we export to, exports are things which someone else in some other country buys from us. Switzerland most notably isn't like the US where the government can decree something be done. The govt sent negotiators and tried to salvage it, they cannot do more.

other reasons such as the inability to sign the damn treaties on our end. Hopefully this disaster finally gets the new treaties over the finishing line, its about damn time.
August 1, 2025 at 2:20 PM
I'm not sure what your goals are here, if the goal was to have the lowest tariffs possible I don't see how anything short of joining the EU would've gotten us a better deal. Don't think the comments by KKS had any influence beyond the borders of Switzerland, the EU relationship is poor for (1/2)

Retaliation only works if the counterparty responds to pain. Trumps blatant disregard for the wellbeing of the American populace make it very hard to find leverage. Choosing not to posture and grandstand is a genuine quality of the federal council because it delivers exactly 0 results.
