Thank you. I keep this account separate from my other social media to stop harassment following me between sites, but I met a lot of my friends (inc cis ones) by posting trans lesbian fiction. It's so lovely to get comments from people saying how much that art means to them. Sharing our art is good!

Because there are other trans lesbians out there, including other trans lesbian artists and storytellers! Yes, there are a lot of people who will be shitty, transmisogynistic, and lesbophobic about our art, but there are people who will love your art so much. It's worth sharing your creativity!

I think that's an interesting perspective. I definitely agree that we write it better and do more interesting things with the trope because of how we approach it! We've certainly carved out our own space within that trope and our own way of using it.

The Ice Queen trope was established as a common misogynistic control fantasy about 'fixing' 'frigid' women through heterosexuality. Even though the behaviour of the archetype is used in lesbian media we don't have that intention behind it; it's not a sapphic trope, but we write it differently. 6/6

When wlw write it as a lesbian dynamic, it tends to be about the character's emotional distance and building a connection as part of the lesbian romance. That's a compelling story arc/character arc that can indeed be relatable. But the politics are very different to the original trope. 5/6

When straight media pulls the Ice Queen trope, I hate because it's primarily motivated by ideas like "'no' means he can win her over", "she should give him a chance", and that a heterosexual relationship will 'fix' her flaw of coldness/detachment/disinterest in men/disinterest in motherhood. 4/x

It's not lesbians who are responsible for establishing and reinforcing the 'bitchy/mean lesbian' trope, that's a trope primarily established by men who hate and resent lesbians. Frankly, I think there's also nothing wrong with a lesbian writing a lesbian character who is bitchy or mean. 3/x

I think this is a case of sapphic romance using an existing well-established romance archetype because those kinds of archetypes are part of the genre of romance. And romance is a genre largely shaped by the production of heterosexual media, which is the media that defined the Ice Queen. 2/x

My feeling is... this isn't a sapphic-specific trope. Straight media is full of Ice Queens, usually with her changing her behaviour for a man by the end; afaik it's not lesbians that even came up with the term 'Ice Queen'. 1/x

me barely even a month ago: "maybe it's finally time for me to publish original ideas as a trans indie author? i've got some original novels i want to write and itch would allow me to do that. i'm so excited!"
me today: "nevermind" 🙃🙃🙃
(teach me to ever feel excited or hopeful, ugh)

I want to read every novel Kuchenga Shenjé ever publishes, I really hope there are more. And the best books are the ones that make me want to WRITE! I want to write something that moves someone's heart like this book moved me. I want to leap into all the ideas I have. aaaaaaaaaaa

Kinda shows how though I liked The Traitor Baru Cormorant, I didn't fully love it. Not the way I loved these. I'll happily read the sequels to The Traitor, but I'm not super duper HOOKED the way I am by LibThi. Like Kimmy last year, LibThi will be the book I read this year I look back on for years.

I finished 'The Library Thief' by Kuchenga Shenjé this morning, and needed to read more of something beautiful so badly I read 'Dulhaniyaa' by Talia Bhatt in a single sitting 😭😭😭😭 Massively recommend both books, my heart is bursting aaaaaaaaaa

They catch me three days later, after my heart explodes like a racehorse.

Not in its current state, Equality Act still covers cis lesbians. But it could be a wedge to try and deny protections to cis lesbians in relationships with trans women, maybe. There might be a court case that runs into this at some point, but legally defining a 'lesbian' is not a good thing anyway.
