Wrapping up a white paper on wages in the tall ship industry vs the greater maritime industry. Not sure why anyone cares since Cap'n Crunch murdered someone on his ship and the world is silent.

Interviewed for a tech job once. They asked "quick, you're on a random street corner in New York City and you need to find out how many pay phones there are in the entire city. What do you do?"
"I find a pay phone, call the phone company from it & ask how many they have in NYC."
They were shocked? >

I bought a suit in 2014 that was just a little too small for me. The plan was to start wearing it when I lost a little weight. I'm wearing it for the first time this week. Life is weird.

As DEI & affirmative action programs are rolled back I'm thinking about the Reconstruction's end when Black folks were cut out of city, state & federal jobs. My thesis subject, James Parker was forced out of his Atl postal job with what the press called the whitewashing of the Georgia postal wkforce

November 11, 1906. Mount Vernon, Ill. An aeronaut named Wesson planned to take a dog up on a hot air balloon and then send him down with a parachute. What could go wrong? (A short #history thread)

Since I don't want to think about today's news, let's talk about Admiralty Law. On June 25, 2012 Cap'n Crunch's negligent actions led to the likely death of Jean LaFoote. Crunch calls him a pirate, but if an unarmed person boards a large merchant ship and says "mine" is he really a pirate?

As #McKinley is coming up a lot, I'm thinking about my masters thesis that re-wrote/corrected his assassination narrative through the lens of Black heroism & citizenship. Always happy to share thoughts/info/sources with other #historians.

I woke my wife up at 2:30 last night to ask "what if the smoke monster from Lost just gave people emphysema? That would be crazy."
Silence for 15 seconds and then, "what?"
She fell asleep before I repeated the question. Very disrespectful.

9/9/1909 marked the first time in #history that a man & tiger attempted to descend from a hot air balloon in parachutes over a crowd of people. Barely anyone was mauled by the tiger.

Very happy to see #rhodeisland moving towards a new historian laureate. My one interaction with him was shocking and disappointing enough to ensure that I would never speak to him again.

There has been a lot of speculation as to whether Cap'n Crunch is in the Navy or if it's a stolen valor situation. I suspected that he was a licensed merchant captain & reached out to the source. Turns out he's neither- just another old white dude calling himself captain because he owns a boat. 🤦‍♂️

I'm also eager to share my timeline of Americans parachuting animals from balloons, helicopters, and planes. Bears, tigers, and beavers- if it breathes and poses a danger to people or environments, we've dropped it from the heavens.

Really excited to use this platform to share my body of research on Cap'n Crunch's maritime experience, his license/rank, and the blood on his hands (PepsiCo's silence on this is problematic at best).
