Unfortunately that's not accurate. The people who created the state that led to what we have now were themselves the exact same people running the fledgeling government.
They wanted to be richer, didn't want to pay taxes, and relied on slave or poor wage labor to make money.

That's the problem, there has always been an existential problem that if we don't vote for the moderate Democrat that we will cease being a land of the free, and then that candidate does note fix the issues that lead to those existential problems, so we rinse and repeat.
