Just get the rules right - you don't need to be an expert. I dont think I'd consider myself "expert" at any systems - but I know how to run them!

Yes! You don't have to be expert in every system - often the best way to first run a TTRPG is as a one-shot

(I'm assuming by public spaces you mean conventions, and not just in some park somewhere)

It's not the failure that bothers me, it's the lack of stakes. And the "everyone rolls" which guarantees somebody will make it (thanks to binomial probabilities)

I find ammesia / blank slate one shots really frustrating as a player, to the point where I'll actively avoid them - I need something to play my character with, even if its just "Dwarf Fighter"

So the first two are absolutely of the TV era where an episode was a one-shot.

I think "go big," while slightly hand-wavey, is probably the best advice I can offer. Extend the scope of threats, stakes, and failure.

I wonder if this guy is related to "Boris Johnson" who introduced "voter id" as Prime Minister in 2023 ... off the back of some crazy US conspiracy theories ... and in the process, made digital ID pretty much inevitable.

And I don't think crunchy is necessarily a negative term. And games can certainly, unlike peanut butter, be both crunchy and smooth.

13th Age is, by whatever definition we want, crunchy. It doesn't generally care about equipment.

Mausritter is really simple, but tracks inventory tightly (in a particularly elegant way).
