Bluesky feels like ‘old Twitter’ where people engage contemporaneously - and through those interactions feel connected to other people.

Meta botched it badly with Threads.

They created Wordagram… and conversation ain’t just content; it’s interaction.

Someone says something. People respond and interact with each other.

I’ve used Instagram more than ever these past six months but without ever finding much love in it. It’s a ‘content consumption’ platform. It’s a place to mindlessly scroll. There is little ‘social’ in it.

I joined Bluesky early and thought it weighted immediacy *too heavily*.

Now, though, between the addition of the ‘Discovery’ tab and the growth in user base, it feels like they got it just right.

People see posts *fast* and react fast. It works like human conversation.

If your goal is to serve up content that people engage with *once* it works just fine to use an algorithm that deprioritizes 1) immediacy; and 2) the *relationships* between users.

If your goal is to serve up media around which people can be *social*, that kind of algorithm is a disaster.

Instagram is not a conversation platform. People reply to the original poster and that is it. They don’t have conversations or engage in any real way beyond the first touch. They see something once, react, and move on.

Instagram’s algorithm is entirely tuned to that model.
