If you're reading this and you feel like you're on this road or you're watching this happen around you, it's important to take a beat and think about protective and healing practices. I wish I had more written up but I'm still figuring this out myself.
Symptoms of Secondary Traumatic Stress Secondary traumatic stress looks like traumatic stress in your brain and your body but it's differentiated from other kinds of traumatic stress because the trauma you are responding to is connected to your role caring for people experiencing trauma directly. Although everyone's experience is different, there are some common ways that secondary traumatic stress shows up. • Intrusion: Intrusion is when you have recurring and involuntary memories or thoughts about the traumatic events in your community or that you encounter in your community help work Avoidance: Avoidance is when you are exerting a lot of effort consistently to not think about the trauma or the things that might make you think about the trauma. Sometimes this looks like trying to talk yourself into not feeling your feelings or thinking about the future. Arousal: Arousal is when you might feel irritable, behave reactively, or have trouble managing your emotions, or resting If you have experienced trauma in your life before you may be more likely to feel some or all the components of secondary traumatic stress. If you also experience other challenges related to your mood or well-being (such as depression, or anxiety) secondary traumatic stress might exacerbate these so it's worth mentioning to your mental health provider or your support network.

I will never for my entire life understand why people are so fucking hostile to the idea that a word they use is violent against disabled people and they shouldn’t say it

We remove racial slurs from our vocabulary easily. Slurs against disabled people are no different, you’re just lazy and ableist
Louise @louisev1.bsky.social By all means, give us a better descriptive term then. What is a better word to describe people so brain addled that they willingly encourage politicians to destroy them? People that vote against their best interests. People that say they want to live under a dictator & praise putin. Pick a word.
